Thursday, May 15 - Preconference Workshops
 
Take some time to polish your professional skills at the WaACRAO pre-conference workshop. Each day we use the valuable skills of communication, leadership, networking, and change management to pursue our work goals. Come and join with other WaACRAOans to reflect on ways to make those skills more effective. You’ll learn new strategies and also be reminded about fundamental practices while meeting colleagues from around the state. See you there!

VETERANS ISSUES
Presenter: Al Souma, Disabilities Support Coordinator/Counselor
An increasing number of veterans from the current war will shortly be returning to our campuses. Most will be attending both community and four year institutions across the country. Counselors at Seattle Central Community College conducted a state wide workshop last May addressing the experiences we have encountered with our returning Veterans. Issues in the forefront include the need for academic support, financial assistance, instructor’s awareness of veteran needs, and integration challenges to name a few. Veterans bring a unique perspective to our campuses and we are obligated to provide the best possible responses to their needs. This workshop will focus on the issues and strategies being considered at this time.

This session will highlight updates concerning current issues with implications for transfer within Washington State. Topics will include the Washington Community Common Course Number project, the Reauthorization Act, and Major Related Programs.
 
NATIONAL STUDENT CLEARINGHOUSE

The NSC Electronic transcript request process implementations are on the rise in Washington State. Dannette Sullivan will be on hand to demonstrate this technology and have key college staff on hand to answer questions.
 
EMAIL TIPS AND TRICKS
Presenter: Beth McElroy, Student Academic Specialist, Seattle University
Do you have questions about e-mail protocol? Which fonts are professional and which shortcuts can be used to make e-mail easier? Come learn some tips and tricks to effective e-mail communication in the workplace.

TECHNOLOGY – GLOBAL ISSUES
Presenter: Bob Billings, Chief Information Officer, Higher Education Coordinating Board
Presenter: Cable Green, Director of E-Learning, State Board for Community and Technical Colleges
Bob Billings and Cable Green will discuss how the Higher Education Coordinating Board’s Strategic Master Plan and the Technology Transformation Task Force’s Technology Plan collectively redefine Washington higher education technology strategy. They will discuss policy goals, practical implementation issues, and change management strategies as we collectively move into 21st century infrastructure, student services, eLearning, and student centered administrative systems.

RESIDENCY WORKSHOP
Presenter: Anne Shaw, Office of the Attorney General
This session will include updates by Anne Shaw from the State of Washington’s Attorney General’s Office and invite questions and discussion from the attendees. Bring your Residency Handbook’s and questions for this interactive workshop.
 
LEGISLATIVE ISSUES
Presenter: Vi Boyer, President of Independent Colleges
Presenter: Chris Reykdal, Director, Administrative Services Division, State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

Updates from Vi Boyer and Chris Reykdal will be presented during this session.
 
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS ISSUES
Presenter: Anselm Chong, Central Washington University
This session will touch upon aspects of working with international students, effectively comparing and contrasting two student service organizational models both from a centralized and decentralized perspective.
 
DEALING WITH DIFFICULT PEOPLE

Parking

 

To park for the conference, drive to the CWU Parking Kiosk.  It is located between Pearl Street and Pine Street on University Way. This is one block east from the stop light at the corner of Main Street and University Way.  (See section C-01 on the campus map.)  Just mention "WaACRAO" to the Kiosk attendant.

 

Park near the Kiosk as directed, then walk two blocks east and two blocks north on D Street to reach Hertz Hall.
